Summer Blood Challenge 2007

The Reece Bancell Memorial Association is pleased to support the Red Cross Summer Blood Challenge again this summer.

On Thursday 13th December, Motorcyclists & Police across NSW joined together today in friendly rivalry to launch the 16th annual Summer Blood Challenge.

Held at the new Elizabeth St Donor Centre in Sydney the event was supported by special guests; three time  Australian Superbike Champion, Shawn Giles, the NSW Commissioner of Police, Commissioner Scipione and Motorcycle Council of NSW delegate, Mr Warren Buffet who all rolled up their sleeves and donated blood.  Shawn donating for the first time, Good on you!  Shawn was up and about and on the road by 5am to make the launch in Sydney, what a great effort in support of this worthy challenge.

The Summer Blood Challenge is a friendly competition between NSW Police Force and Motorcyclists across NSW and the ACT, their friends, families and neighbours are all invited to come and donate blood and support their team during the summer months.

With the Motorcyclists currently in front with 8 wins compared to 7 wins by the NSW Police Force,  Shawn Giles and Warren Buffet are  confident of another Motorcyclist victory this year, making it four wins in a row.

“I encourage all motorcyclists to get behind the Challenge this summer – we have a title to defend, a chance to make it four wins in a row for our side and lives to save,” Shawn said.

Commissioner Scipione added, “I encourage all policemen and women to come forward in support this summer and to get their friends and family to donate for the Challenge.”

During his blood donation Motorcycle Council of NSW delegate, Mr Warren Buffet commented “Giving blood is such an easy way to make a direct difference to the community. The fact that one in three people will need blood at some stage in their lives means that most of us have needed blood or know someone that has.”

Speaking from the launch Australian Red Cross Blood Services NSW/ACT Operations Unit Manager, Garry Wolfe, said “Thanks to the Police and Motorcyclists we are aiming to help save the 100,000th Australian’s life as part of the challenge.

“Summer can be a challenging time for Australia’s blood supply with many people taking a well-earned break from their usual routines. To ensure Australians in hospital over the summer holiday season have the blood and blood products they require for their survival and quality of life I ask that if you have never donated before or haven’t recently now is the time to make an appointment ,” Mr Wolfe said.

For a chance to win a ride on a Harley Davidson, courtesy of Bikescape Motorcycle Tours and Rentals, 2 x 3 Day pass to WBSK at Phillip Island 2008, donated by Phillip Island Circuit and 12 months subscription to AMCN & Rapid Bikes.  All you have to do is visit a Donor Centre in NSW or the ACT, give blood and complete the entry form to go in the draw to win.

The race is now on to help save 10,000 lives this summer through the Summer Blood Challenge.

Do something special – give blood for your team this summer and help save lives.

Reece Bancell Memorial Association Charity Auction/Dinner 2007

What a NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Glitz, Glamour, Motorcycles AND a whopping $39,000+!!!
Amazing to think over $10,000 up on last year’s figure!!!

These funds will certainly go a long way toward helping the Association meet its’ objectives over the next twelve months. A great night was had by all who attended the Reece Bancell Memorial Association’s 4th annual charity auction/dinner on Saturday 10th November 2007.

The Epping club opened the doors to the Grand Ballroom at 7pm to an array of auction items such as the Ladies pamper pack, a signed & mounted Chad Reed radiator shroud, Casey Stoner’s boots, mini chopper and various signed motorcycle memorabilia from MotoGP and Australian SBK stars, plus much more.

Thanks to David White (CEO Motorcycling Australia) the auctioneer on the night, who also donated an extra 2 x double MotoGP paddock passes that went for $2,750 a double pass.
All items generously donated by the Motorcycle fraternity.

David, with Cheryl Muldoon (Yamaha) presented the Reece Bancell Scholarship to this years’ winner for the 2008 season to Cameron Keevers of WA. Cameron was totally excited about carrying the flag in 2008 saying, “This is an incredible opportunity and I’m really honoured to receive the scholarship”. Well done Cameron!

The food and drinks were delightful and our MC/Comedian Gerard Cogley who flew in especially from Melbourne VIA Tasmania on Saturday afternoon!!, keeping us well entertained all through the evening. Unfortunately Mark Bracks couldn’t get back in time, but sent his well wishes.

Dr Carl Lee (Chief Medical Officer, Motorcycling Australia) did a short presentation showing the story of the RBMA’s involvement with Team Medical Australia and the difference it has made to them and to the safety of motorcycle racing here in Australia. He talked about the medical equipment that had been donated by the RBMA, including the $30,000 donation made by the RBMA in September, which assisted in relocating and renovating the medical centre at Phillip Island. He also mentioned my involvement in assisting the medical team at both the World SBK and MotoGP.  I am in awe of the work the team does and it is unbelievable that most of them use their annual leave to work at these events.  They usually start their days at some ridiculous time in the morning, (waking at 5–5.30 am each day) and not leaving the track until well after 6 pm at night (if they are lucky).  Standing out on the track in all sorts of weather for the safety of the riders and as we all know, Phillip Island can have all four seasons and more in the one day.

Keith Muir did an excellent job making sure we had lots of photos as memories of the night.  The absolutely gorgeous Kate and Rennie Scaysbrook did an awesome job displaying the auction items through the crowd.  As you can see Kate having a lot of fun on the mini chopper, watch out boys!

The night went off without a hitch and I would like to thank the committee that work tirelessly all through the year and all those that assisted prior to the night and also on the night. I thank everyone that has supported us through the last few years and we, as the Association, will continue to assist in making motorcycle riding/racing as safe as possible and to assist families that have experienced trauma due to a motorcycle incident.

We hope to see you at next years’ dinner.
Take care & ride safely.

Press Release September 2007
Medical centre upgrade for GMC MotoGP

Competitors at this year’s GMC MotoGP will ride safe in the knowledge that the medical centre at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit has been upgraded into a completely refurbished facility, compliant with the highest international standards.

Dr Carl Le, Chief Medical Officer of Motorcycling Australia and a delegate of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) believes the new building will enable his staff to continue to provide the highest level of care under new enhanced surroundings.

“The new works have created a greatly improved facility which will complement the world-class medical professionals we’ve always been fortunate to have working with us,” said Dr Carl.

“The medical centre will now meet the most stringent guidelines set down by the FIM and FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) for the provision of emergency medical services at motor sport events.”

The most significant upgrade is the installation of a large, enclosed multi-functional area in the middle of the existing structure - creating a meeting and general purpose area for the medical team to conduct their briefing sessions.

The two resuscitation bays have also been doubled in width, dramatically improving access for the medical centre professionals to deliver the highest level of emergency care within the building itself.

The ambulance entrance will also be enclosed to enable patients to be unloaded in privacy and under cover.

The entire facility has been moved, with its physical orientation altered to improve access, both for ambulance vehicles as well as access from the paddock area. It will also have direct access to a dedicated helipad for aero-medical evacuation purposes.

Utility upgrades have seen the installation of permanent, triple phase electrical power and data cabling. A brand new water and sewerage system has also been implemented. Until now, drainage from the centre was stored in barrels, which had to be manually drained.

The works have been made possible by way of a $30,000 contribution from the Reece Bancell Memorial Association. The association was established by the Bancell family, in memory of Reece Bancell who was fatally injured in a Supersport race in 2003. The association provides support for emergency medical services to motorcycle sports and trauma counselling services. It also sponsors promising Australian riders to enable them to compete in the national series.

“We are very proud to assist with presenting the highest level of emergency medical care to competitors from all around the world who are coming for the GMC Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. This legacy will also benefit all future events held at the GP circuit including the World Superbike Championships,” said Jill Bancell, the President of the Association.

A team of 106 medical volunteers will provide their time and expertise at this year’s GMC MotoGP. They are all members of Team Medical Australia - a not-for-profit organisation that provides training and support for medical professionals in the provision of emergency medical services at motor sport events.

The 2007 GMC Australian Motorcycle takes place at Phillip Island from 12 – 14 October.
